Shark Profiler

Building on the foundations of criminal profiling in humans, I developed the concept of profiling biting sharks as a “Shark Profiler” — an expertise that requires in-depth knowledge of forensic science (bite characteristics), behavioral ecology (the overall profile of species in their relationship to humans) and ethology (the specific, individual behavior of potentially dangerous animals). This approach also encompasses the relationship of humans to nature and to predators.

The scientific concept of the “problem shark” is meant to change the perception of shark risk and to foster the conservation of these unduly feared animals.

For sharks, I developed the Individual Genetic PROfiling of Sharks tool (PROGENIR), which makes it possible to find a biting shark after a bite and potentially remove it selectively, while sparing its congeners.

The emergence of these concepts over the past 15 years is recounted in two books published in 2026: “Le requin singulier” (CNRS Éditions) and “Dans la tête d’un requin” (Éditions BELIN).
