My basic training in general economics allowed me to explore economic levers that can be mobilized for the conservation of coral ecosystems as a whole. This included the notion of ecosystem services, such as coastal protection, and tools such as coral restoration and other nature-based solutions with innovative financing mechanisms.
With a narrower focus, I applied these approaches to shark conservation, advocating the implementation of “Payments for ecosystem services” and a better redistribution of the economic rent generated by shark-watching ecotourism.
